The RSPA is celebrating throughout 2023, sharing member and association highlights, memories, and IT industry predictions. “Celebrating the RSPA’s 75th anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate both our history and how our community continues to adapt,” said RSPA President & CEO Jim Roddy. “Many companies have been RSPA members for decades and we continue to add startup tech companies because our community helps each other not just keep up with change but stay ahead. If you partner with an RSPA member, you have an IT industry leader working for you.”

The RSPA was founded in 1948 as a community of cash register dealers, originally named the ICRDA (Independent Cash Register Dealers Association). The association originated to provide cash register dealers with a community to adequately receive replacement cash register parts, connect with like-minded organizations, and grow their businesses.

The organization adapted to a trade association dedicated to the point-of-sale (POS) industry with membership exclusively made up of POS resellers. The ICRDA later merged with the SDA (Systems Dealer Association), establishing the association known as the RSPA today.

Post-merger, the RSPA transitioned to an industry association to create more education and connection opportunities for members. The association began to encompass value-added resellers (VARs), software developers, vendors, and distributors in the retail, restaurant, grocery, and cannabis verticals.

The RSPA has grown to more than 700 member companies, provides year-round education and connection opportunities, and hosts two annual in-person events: the summer conference RetailNOW (1,500+ attendees) and the winter conference Inspire (200+ attendees).
