LAVAL, QC – LOC Software, a leading retail management software provider, released its 2026 Exploring Grocery Technology Trends survey report. LOC surveyed professionals at more than 100 grocery chains and small to mid-tier grocery stores. Respondents reported their challenges, technology implementation plans, and outlook for the industry over the next three to five years.
The survey confirmed that grocers know that technology can help them overcome challenges with labor shortages and shrinking margins. However, fewer than 10% of grocers feel prepared to implement advanced solutions.
Additional findings from the 2026 Exploring Grocery Technology Trends Survey include:
- 73% of grocers have invested in loyalty rewards programs, but only 49% believe they are effective.
- 74% of grocers have invested in online ordering or mobile apps, and 58% have integrated with home delivery platforms.
- 75% of grocers agree AI will impact their operations, and 28% plan to implement AI to make personalized offers and product recommendations in the coming months.
- More than one-fourth of grocers are exploring electronic shelf labels (ESLs) to automate price updates
- 78% of grocers with 1-9 stores are extremely or moderately concerned about cybersecurity; 60% of businesses with 100+ stores share the same concern.
“Our research paints a picture of an industry navigating shrinking margins, looking for ways to accomplish more work during labor shortages, and still provide excellent service and quality foods to their communities,” says Stephan Mercier, Founder and CTO of LOC Software. “In our role, we’ve seen grocers implement technology to achieve their business goals. This research confirms that grocers plan to continue to innovate, even if they have to overcome challenges, by building their technology stacks and modernizing their operations.”
LOC conducted this survey online in October and November 2025, in conjunction with The Shelby Report and PDG Insights.
