What is Costing You Customers?

I’ve worked with business owners here in Rochester- and across the country- and I see the same roadblocks over and over again. Here are the traps that kill your marketing results (and how to avoid them).

1. Letting Friends & Family Run Your Website
Your cousin might be a whiz with WordPress, and that’s fine when you’re just starting out. But as your business grows, so do your digital needs. Google rankings, mobile speed, security, content updates- these aren’t weekend projects. At some point, “my buddy built my site” stops cutting it, and you’re left with an outdated website that’s holding your business hostage.

2. Thinking Your Website Is “Done”
Websites aren’t like buildings- you don’t just put up the walls and walk away. They need constant care. Every day you ignore it, Google ignores you. Fresh content = visibility. No updates = invisibility.

3. Inconsistent Branding
Your business name, your Google listing, your social handles, your business cards… if they don’t match, you’re confusing customers (and Google!) before they ever get to you. Consistency builds trust. Confusion kills it.

4. Acting Like You Don’t Need Customers
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “We don’t market to customers- we only deal with businesses.” Translation: “We know everything already.” That mindset shuts down opportunities and blinds you to ideas that could grow your bottom line.

5. Being Closed When Customers Are Ready to Buy
I once dropped my car off for service at 8am on a Friday. If there had been a salesperson there, I would have traded it in on the spot. Missed opportunity. If you’re a retailer closing at 5pm, when exactly do you expect people to shop? During their lunch break?

6. Not Seeing What Your Customers See
Your restaurant’s décor hasn’t been dusted or updated in 40 years. Your bathroom is disgusting. Your sign can’t be read from the street. These details drive customers away, but you’re too close to notice. Get an honest outsider’s perspective. (Or call me, I’m happy to tell you if your baby’s ugly.)  I recently had a call from a prospect complaining that business was way down.  My fresh set of eyes discovered that his business phone number wasn’t working!  This morning I uncovered a prospect’s Meta ads were going to broken links!  You are not the customer- you’re the owner. You need a “secret shopper!”

7. Sticking With “The Way We’ve Always Done It”
Kodak said the same thing.

8. You Know Everything About Marketing
You know everything about marketing?  (No one does.) Or you hired one marketing person who “does it all?”  Agencies exist because no single person can master web design, SEO, paid ads, social, video, and media buying. Good agencies have experts in every lane, and they blew someone else’s marketing dollars to learn how to do it right.  Stop wasting your time and money trying to DIY.

9. Measuring the Wrong Results
Likes, views, and seeing your ad on TV are vanity metrics. If you’re not tracking conversions and sales, you’re wasting money.  How are you doing month over month?  Year over year?

10. Abandoning Social Media
If you haven’t posted in a year, you might as well hang an “Out of Business” sign on your door. Social media isn’t about instant sales- it’s about influence and credibility. If you’re silent, your competitors are speaking louder.

Final Thought
Get honest, stay open, and let the experts do what they do best- so you can do what you do best: run your business.
