Roddy’s Recommended Reading for SMB Executives – 2026 Edition

By Jim Roddy, President & CEO at the RSPA

Roddy’s Recommended Reading is back and bigger than ever for 2026!

For the past 20+ years, I’ve dedicated time most every week to leadership-based reading. I’ve kept track of the highest-quality books to compile “Roddy’s Recommended Reading,” a list I first shared publicly seven years ago and have updated annually since then. The list has expanded to 257 books thanks to recommendations from many of my SMB executive friends and RSPA members.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve read 18 additional books, each new title identified on the list below with an asterisk (*). Roddy’s Recommended Reading is categorized by subject and then listed in alphabetical order. To help make this over 200-title list more digestible, my 33 most highly recommended books are marked with a number sign (#). While every title on this list is at least very good, the highly recommended books are head of the class.

While I was updating this list with the new titles, I noticed a trend. Several books focused on helping SMBs stand up to enterprise-sized competitors. In the retail IT channel, we call that VARs and ISVs competing against margin-obliterating, VC-backed, 800-number, one-size-fits-all POS providers who don’t have a channel.

Among those books are David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcom Gladwell, Nail Your Niche by Brian Ellwood, Big Little Legends by Gair Maxwell, and even former Princeton men’s basketball coach Pete Carril’s book The Smart Take From The Strong.

I have inside information on Carril’s philosophy and approach. For three years, I played for his former assistant coach Bob Dukiet at Gannon University in Erie, PA. The full quote, as Dukiet would tell us often, was “The strong guys take from the weak guys, but the smart guys take from the strong guys.”

After reading about so many underdogs, I wanted to learn more about what made the strong guys mighty besides their abundant resources. So near the end of 2025 I dove into Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon by Colin Bryar and Bill Carr.

I often read for a few minutes to unwind before bed, but Working Backwards made that difficult. Several times I took notes and emailed them to myself because the book is such an idea generator.

These key passages can help all SMB leaders, especially VARs and ISVs:

  • Start from the customer experience and work backwards from that.
  • Our culture is four things: customer obsession instead of competitor obsession, willingness to think long term, eagerness to invent, and taking professional pride in operational excellence.
  • “We need to plant many seeds because we don’t know which one of those seeds will grow into a mighty oak.”
  • “We shouldn’t be afraid of taking on hard problems if solving them would unlock substantial value.”
  • Invention is a more challenging path than fast following. The roadmap for fast following is relatively clear – you study what your competitor has built and copy it. There is no roadmap for invention.
  • Staying the current course offers managers comfort and certainty – even if the price of that short-term certainty is instability and value destruction later on.
  • There were a number of sound arguments put forward for why we should not embark on a free shipping program.
  • We simply could not prove that free shipping would work. We just had to try it.
  • We began by getting something terribly wrong, but learned from our mistakes and, in the end, got it fantastically right.
  • The vision was clear: Add more benefits that had broad, global appeal in order to make Prime earth’s most compelling and irresistible value for customers. “We want Prime to be such a good value, you’d be irresponsible to not be a member.”

Amazon’s practices reinforce the “Try, Test, Measure, Adapt” philosophy we see so many successful retail IT solution providers embrace. That ties into a resource we have that the giants don’t: each other.

The big guys have to run their tests internally while we can lean on the mesh network of independent entrepreneurs that make up the RSPA community. Plus we’re not encumbered by corporate bureaucracy that slows down or kills so many inventions.

Let’s commit in 2026 to not only read more but to lean on each other more in order to accelerate the success of the entire retail IT channel.

In another year, I’ll update this list again so you can see what else I’ve discovered. Best of luck on your journey to become a dedicated leader and reader!
