What is CARDS?

CARDS stands for "Coalition of Associations for Retail Data Security".

It is a coalition of associations working collaboratively to provide our respective members with best practices and information to assist in securing their retail data.

Why was CARDS created?

There are multiple stakeholders in the U.S. payments chain - Consumers/Shoppers, Merchants/Retailers, Application Developers, Hardware Developers, Technology Resellers, and many more – and it’s critical to include them in conversations about how to best protect consumer card account data.

The current flawed system will only continue to get worse unless there is reform of the payments system, PCI is simplified, and merchants and retail technology partners are provided a seat at the table as the U.S. moves toward new payment technologies (i.e. Chip Cards and Mobile Payments). These technology changes will have enormous equipment upgrade costs for merchants, and it’s critical that we get things right when we transition to these new systems.
