PAYMENT PROCESSING LANDSCAPE: Every consumer receives multiple credit card offers each week. The card companies have hooked the public on the ease of credit card purchases. The demand for credit/debit card purchases exists, making both consumers and issuers content. The banks and processors have shared in the frenzy and found profitable niches. It is the Merchants and the Retail Technology Providers who are left as the vulnerable parties. Retail Technology Providers must use a payment processing product with an infrastructure that is susceptible to breaches by hackers and criminals. Retail technology providers have the choice of no sale or sale of a vulnerable product. Merchants install a system to process credit card transactions only to find they are responsible for every weakness in that system. Because of those vulnerabilities in the credit card payment processing system, each year there are hundreds of data breaches exposing personal data for tens of thousands of card holders. |
